Celtic FC has announced that manager Brendan Rodgers has resigned from his position. This news came shortly after the club's disappointing loss to Hearts of Midlothian, which left Celtic eight points behind in the title race.

In a statement, owner Dermot Desmond shared his discontent regarding the season's direction. "I want to acknowledge Brendan’s contributions during his two tenures, which were pivotal in our recent success," he stated in a letter to the fans. "However, I am also deeply disappointed by the events of the past months."

Desmond further criticized Rodgers, noting his perceived lack of commitment. He mentioned that Celtic had offered Rodgers a new contract in June, expressing frustration over Rodgers’ public suggestion that no discussions had occurred. “Brendan's implication that the club had made no commitments regarding a contract was simply false," Desmond stated.

Concerns Over Transfer Policy: "We Had a Collective Strategy"

Desmond also took issue with Rodgers' comments concerning the club's transfer strategy. "Every sign and sale during his time was conducted with Brendan’s full approval and support," he asserted. "Any suggestion to the contrary is completely inaccurate." This summer, Celtic invested €15.13 million into new players while also generating over €30 million from player sales, only behind Rangers in spending.

In contrast, Hearts, who defeated Celtic 3-1, had a much more modest approach, spending just €2.97 million on new signings last summer. While Rodgers faced challenges losing key players like Nicolas Kühn, sold for €19 million, and Adam Idah for €6.9 million, it’s significant to note that Celtic under Rodgers has brought in €133 million from player sales against €88 million spent on replacements. Desmond insists that Rodgers was fully aware and in agreement with these transactions.

Injuries to critical players such as Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alistair Johnston, Diego Jota, and Daizen Maeda have also hampered the team's performance. Despite these challenges, the results are disappointing given Celtic's financial strength compared to teams like Hearts. The situation isn’t exclusive to the league; the club has also faltered in European competitions, failing to qualify for the Champions League group stage and winning just one of their three Europa League matches. While it is official that Rodgers resigned, the circumstances suggest that a parting may have been inevitable.
