Kingsley Coman has long been linked with a move away from Bayern Munich, and now it appears a transfer is imminent. On Friday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Al-Nassr is eyeing the left winger. Just days later, reports suggest the transfer is merely a matter of time. Al-Nassr, which boasts Cristiano Ronaldo as its star player, has allegedly reached an agreement with Bayern Munich on a transfer fee. Sources from Germany indicate that Bayern can expect around €30 million, including bonuses. Coman is expected to finalize a three-year contract valued between €20-25 million annually. Such a deal would rank Coman among the ten most expensive outgoing transfers in Bayern's history.

This transfer saga began a year ago when Coman was previously linked to a move to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Hilal showing strong interest; however, he opted to remain at Bayern. Last season, Coman had nine goals and six assists across 45 matches, although injuries limited his playtime, averaging just 46 minutes per game. Consequently, his market value dropped from €50 million to €30 million. This downturn contributed to renewed speculation in early spring about his potential departure. To hasten the transfer, Bayern lowered last year's price tag of €70 million to between €30 million and €40 million.

“I said I would like to stay,” Coman stated during the FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S. this summer. “I have two years left on my contract, and in football, if you’re under contract and happy, you usually stay.” He underscored his good rapport with head coach Vincent Kompany, who affirmed Coman’s importance in the squad. “Kingsley is always a key player for my team,” Kompany noted.

Given this context, why is Bayern Munich so keen to part ways with the winger? One primary reason is Coman's substantial salary, reportedly ranging between €17-18 million per season. Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has been instructed by club management to enhance the squad while also reducing wage expenses. Under the previous leadership of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, player salaries skyrocketed. Eberl had to permit Leroy Sané to leave on a free transfer to Galatasaray due to his high wages, a trend that began after Bayern acquired Sané ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The future of Bayern Munich hinges on how they will utilize the transfer fee and Coman’s wages. Recently, Bayern secured left winger Luis Díaz from Liverpool for €70 million. With Coman's exit, Serge Gnabry remains the only other left-wing option, and Kompany is considering using him as a backup striker should Harry Kane face injury. This situation leaves Bayern's attack significantly weakened after Coman's departure, especially since Jamal Musiala will be sidelined for the first half of the season due to an injury sustained at the Club World Cup. Kompany has afforded playing time to young talents Lennart Karl (17) and Wisdom Mike (16) during preseason, but expecting them to fill the void left by Coman would be a challenge. Hence, Bayern may intensify efforts to secure Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, whom they will encounter in the upcoming Franz-Beckenbauer-Cup this Saturday.

As for Al-Nassr, the club has yet to secure a significant title despite signing Cristiano Ronaldo in January 2023. Under new head coach Jorge Jesus, they aim to change this narrative by attracting more top talent from Europe. The club has already recruited João Félix for €30 million from Chelsea and is set to add center-back Iñigo Martínez on a free transfer from Barcelona. Coman will reunite with former teammate Sadio Mané, who joined Al-Nassr in 2023 for €30 million after his stint at Bayern. Like Coman, Mané was on a large contract, and his transfer helped Bayern reduce their overall spending.
