Bayern Munich is on the brink of setting a new record today.
With thirteen consecutive wins across all competitions, Bayern Munich secured a 3-0 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach at Borussia-Park last Saturday. Goals from Joshua Kimmich (64’), Raphaël Guerreiro (69’), and Lennart Karl (81’) propelled the team to this impressive win, allowing Bayern to equal a record set by AC Milan, who started the 1992/93 season with 13 wins in succession. Bayern’s remarkable start to the season includes victories in the Franz-Beckenbauer-Supercup against Stuttgart (2-1), the first round of the DFB-Pokal against Wehen Wiesbaden (3-2), three Champions League games, and eight Bundesliga matches (overview).
In comparing their records, AC Milan kicked off the 1992/93 season with a Super Coppa Italia win over Parma (2-1), seven victories in Serie A, three in the Coppa Italia, and three in the UEFA Champions League, which included two wins over NK Olimpija and one over Slovan Bratislava during the qualification stage. Interestingly, Bayern’s current squad can already stake a claim to the record based on goal differential, boasting 47-9, compared to Milan’s 1992/93 goal difference of 45-13.
“This record wasn’t achieved by coincidence,” Bayern midfielder Kimmich commented after the Gladbach victory. “It is the result of hard work.” On Wednesday, Bayern Munich has the chance to set a new record in the DFB-Pokal against Köln. Coach Vincent Kompany stated, “We can’t afford to be complacent; we need to keep pushing forward. Wednesday’s cup match will be a different challenge.” He emphasized the need for vigilance despite their successful start: “We can’t get too arrogant; we must remain composed, work hard, and aim for a positive result in the next match.”
Can Bayern Munich make history?
We’ve examined Bayern’s pursuit of breaking AC Milan’s record, but historical comparisons from the Transfermarkt database reveal that Bayern has achieved this feat five times previously, in 2020/21, 2015/16, 2012/13, 1984/85, and 1980/81. On two occasions—in 2021 and 2013—the club went on to win the treble. However, they did not start those seasons with an undefeated streak like this current campaign. As the following graphic shows (with tie-breakers determined by goal differential), this season’s Bayern squad and the 1992/93 Milan team stand out as exceptional. In the history of the top five leagues since the inception of the European Cup in 1955, only 18 clubs have begun a season with 12 wins in their first 13 matches.
