Antoine Semenyo has finalized his sensational transfer to Manchester City. On Friday, the Sky Blues announced that the deal, reportedly costing an initial €72 million along with €1.7 million in potential add-ons, has been completed. The Ghanaian forward arrives at City after netting 10 Premier League goals for Bournemouth this season. Several top clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United, showed interest in Semenyo, but he chose to join Pep Guardiola’s squad.

In a statement released by Manchester City, Semenyo expressed his excitement: “I am incredibly proud to join Manchester City. I have followed City closely over the past decade under Guardiola, and they’ve been the standard-bearers in the Premier League, achieving extraordinary success in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. The club has set the highest standards, boasting world-class players, excellent facilities, and one of the greatest managers in Pep.” He may make his debut at the Etihad against Exeter City in the FA Cup this weekend.

Why Manchester City Pursued Semenyo

It might come as a surprise that Manchester City were keen to sign Semenyo, considering their depth in players capable of playing in wide positions. Semenyo primarily operates on the left wing, a role currently filled impressively by Jérémy Doku this season. Additionally, Savinho and Omar Marmoush are both viable options for that position, with City having paid €75 million just last January for Marmoush from Frankfurt.

However, City sees Semenyo as an attractive market opportunity at a reasonable cost, believing he could be crucial in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Currently, they trail leaders Arsenal by six points. Over the past 18 months, Semenyo has delivered outstanding performances for Bournemouth, racking up 13 goal contributions this league season—only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago have more.
