Chelsea has officially finalized one of the most drawn-out transfer deals of the window by securing the services of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. Reports indicate that the Blues will pay €46.2 million for the winger, along with a 10% sell-on clause. After weeks of negotiations between the two Premier League clubs, an agreement was finally reached. Garnacho was spotted in the directors’ box at Stamford Bridge during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday.
Garnacho has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, extending until 2032, following a successful medical examination on Thursday. The 21-year-old Argentinian winger had his sights set on joining Chelsea after a fallout with Rúben Amorim following the Europa League final. At Chelsea, he will vie for a left-wing spot in Enzo Maresca’s preferred 4-3-3 setup against Jamie Gittens and Pedro Neto, marking a substantial sale for Manchester United.
Alejandro Garnacho’s Position Among Manchester United’s Record Sales
Garnacho, who joined Manchester United from Atlético Madrid as a 16-year-old for just €465,000 in 2020, will see his transfer to Chelsea represent a significant profit for the club. Additionally, as a homegrown talent, his sale will positively impact Manchester United concerning the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. During his time at Old Trafford, Garnacho amassed 48 goal contributions in 144 appearances, and he will look to enhance his performance as he progresses at Chelsea.
As illustrated in the graphic above, Garnacho now ranks as United’s fourth-largest sale in their history at €46.2 million. This transfer surpasses David Beckham’s €37.5 million move to Real Madrid in 2003. Cristiano Ronaldo’s €94 million transfer to Madrid in 2009 remains the club’s record sale and is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.
