Africa, home to over 1.5 billion people, has produced legendary footballers throughout the years. Roger Milla became the first global African superstar with his remarkable performances for Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup, including his iconic corner-flag celebration.

In a historic achievement, George Weah remains the only African player to have won the coveted Ballon d’Or, awarded in 1995 for his extraordinary talent at AC Milan. The upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, set to kick off this December, will bring together the continent’s finest players in Morocco. In anticipation of this prestigious tournament, we present a list of the top African goalscorers in history, featuring some well-known names.

Top African Goalscorers of All Time

According to Transfermarkt’s extensive database, we compiled senior-level data across all competitions—both club and international. Samuel Eto’o leads the way with an impressive tally of 424 goals in 867 appearances for club and country. The former Cameroonian striker scored 56 goals for his national team and netted 368 for clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Chelsea. As shown in the graphic below, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang now holds second place after crossing the 400-goal milestone, thanks to a goal against Nice and a brace in Marseille’s recent Champions League victory over Newcastle United.

Despite facing challenges this season with Liverpool, Mohamed Salah still ranks third with 388 career goals. Both Salah and Aubameyang have a realistic chance to break Eto’o’s record in the coming seasons. Didier Drogba, a Chelsea legend, follows in fourth with 164 goals from 381 appearances for the Blues. Meanwhile, Sadio Mané currently stands at 297 goals and is poised to surpass the 300-mark in the upcoming weeks.
