Hit or miss?
It appears that January will be a rather quiet month at Old Trafford, even though Manchester United is in need of reinforcements. The current season has been tumultuous, highlighted by a disappointing elimination by Grimsby in the League Cup. Nevertheless, United remains well-positioned to secure European competition qualification. As of matchday 22 in the Premier League, they find themselves in 7th place, just one point shy of the Champions League spots.
United has missed several chances to break into the top four, a factor that contributed to Rúben Amorim’s dismissal. Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the season, but it seems unlikely that United’s management will provide him with significant backing in the transfer market. While a new central midfielder is a priority, the club plans to pursue their key targets in the summer. Despite this, Manchester United has made some notable signings in previous January transfer windows, which we will explore here.
Manchester United’s Record January Signings
Bruno Fernandes remains Manchester United’s most significant January signing, having joined from Sporting CP in 2020 for €65 million. The current captain has proven to be a tremendous success, contributing 198 goals in 310 appearances, making him the best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. As illustrated in the accompanying graphic, Juan Mata ranks second after his €44.73m transfer from Chelsea in 2014, earning the admiration of United fans.
In contrast, Alexis Sánchez, who ranks third, failed to live up to expectations. United invested €34 million to bring the Chilean from Arsenal in 2018, but he managed only five goals in 45 matches. The top five is rounded out by current players Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu. Notably, Nemanja Vidic and Andy Cole are among the club’s most successful January signings, appearing in the top ten, while Patrice Evra narrowly missed the cut at 11th.
