17th Managerial Change

Álvaro Arbeloa, a former full-back, has stepped in as the interim manager of Real Madrid following the exit of Xabi Alonso on Monday. This marks the 17th managerial change for the club under President Florentino Pérez during his two tenures. Having served as the Castilla coach since summer, Arbeloa has dedicated his entire coaching career to Real Madrid’s youth academy.
During his playing career with the club from 2009 to 2016, Arbeloa participated in 238 official matches, securing eight titles, including two European Cups. On the international stage, he was part of the Spanish squad that claimed victory in the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships, earning 56 caps overall.
Real Madrid: 17 Coaches Under Florentino Pérez
Throughout Florentino Pérez’s 23-year presidency, the coaching role has seen numerous changes, establishing itself as one of the most challenging positions in football. From his first term between 2000 and 2006 and again from 2009 to the present, Pérez has overseen 17 managerial changes, with a total of 15 different coaches, some of whom have returned for second spells, such as Carlo Ancelotti and Zinédine Zidane.
In chronological order, the managers who have served include Vicente del Bosque, Carlos Queiroz, José Antonio Camacho, Mariano García Remón, Vanderley Luxemburgo, and Juan Ramón López Caro from 2000 to 2006. Since 2009, the following coaches have led the team: Manuel Pellegrini, José Mourinho, Ancelotti, Zidane, Rafael Benítez, Julen Lopetegui, and Santiago Solari. Following Ancelotti, Alonso took charge, and now Arbeloa steps in.
