Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim commended Joshua Zirkzee for his brief appearance as a substitute in the recent 1-1 match against Leeds United, but cautioned the young striker against contemplating a move away from the club this month.

Amorim made the surprising decision to include Zirkzee on the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s match in Yorkshire, even with a reduced squad. The Dutch forward entered the game in the 66th minute and immediately contributed to the team’s play, setting up Matheus Cunha for the equalizer after Brenden Aaronsen had given Leeds the lead in the 62nd minute.

His performance, although short, was noteworthy as Zirkzee has been gradually adapting to a substitute role. While Cunha received the man of the match award, Amorim took the opportunity to highlight Zirkzee’s contributions.

“I believe Josh performed well during his 25 minutes on the field. He connected nicely with his teammates and showcased his potential,” Amorim told TNT Sports. When asked if Zirkzee would remain at the club post-January transfer window, he stated, “You need to concentrate on United. Manchester United is one of the world’s biggest clubs, and if you’re here but focused on another team, there’s a problem.”

Since his €42.5 million transfer from Bologna in July 2024, Zirkzee has faced challenges in the Premier League, scoring only nine goals in 63 appearances and struggling for consistent playing time due to Benjamin Sesko’s arrival. Reports from Italy indicate that clubs like Roma and AC Milan are interested in bringing Zirkzee back to Serie A, but Amorim’s firm comments suggest he wants to retain him within the squad.
