Transfer Rumblings Around Bayern Star

Tottenham Hotspur has made significant efforts to place themselves among the Premier League’s elite, attempting changes to management, board level, and even their stadium, alongside an expenditure of nearly €216 million last summer. Despite their success in clinching the Europa League title under Ange Postecoglou, which ended a 17-year trophy drought, their inconsistent league performance continues to haunt them. Thomas Frank’s position has come under scrutiny just six months into his tenure.
Frank’s tenure saw a slight alleviation of pressure following a narrow 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, where Archie Gray marked his name on the scoresheet with a decisive goal in his 112th career appearance. However, the team’s recent form has them languishing in 13th place, raising concerns about whether further investment is necessary in January, especially given that many summer recruits have yet to meet expectations. Transfermarkt explores three potential signings for the upcoming window.
Could Leon Goretzka Make the Move to Spurs?
One pressing issue for Spurs is the struggle of Rodrigo Bentancur, a reliable player since his 2021 arrival from Juventus, who has failed to regain his form following significant injuries. Additionally, Yves Bissouma is out of favor and might seek an exit in January, either on loan or permanently. Injecting some fresh talent into the midfield could be pivotal for Spurs.
While they already boast depth in midfield with Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, and James Maddison, the team could benefit from an experienced playmaker capable of controlling the pace of the game. Frank previously had Christian Norgaard at Brentford and seems to be lacking a midfield general to lead the team effectively. Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka has been linked with a move, though it remains unclear if the German international would be open to a switch to the Premier League. Adding physicality to the midfield would undoubtedly enhance Spurs’ chances of securing European competition this season.

Potential Goalkeeper Shake-Up with Vicario
There are reports suggesting that Guglielmo Vicario could leave Spurs in January, with Inter Milan showing interest in the goalkeeper. If this materializes, Frank may consider a defensive reorganization. Vicario’s recent performances have been lackluster, raising questions about his ability to dominate in the box. Spurs have conceded 23 goals so far this season, more than double their rivals Arsenal.
If Vicario decides to return to Italy, finding a suitable replacement who can outperform him is no small task, especially since top goalkeepers are a rare find. Notably, only four goalkeepers have been signed for over €50 million in recent times. Marc-André ter Stegen’s unclear situation at Barcelona has made him a name floated as a potential successor at Spurs, providing a glimmer of hope.
Defensive Reinforcements Needed
The heavy reliance on Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven has taken a toll, with both players frequently battling injuries. It’s becoming crucial for Spurs to strengthen this department more than they have over the past couple of years. Aside from Radu Drăgușin and Kevin Danso, the club has struggled to maintain the depth necessary for the demands of modern football and a packed schedule.
With Frank likely to seek reinforcements from his former club Brentford, players like Nathan Collins and Kristoffer Ajer have thrived under his management. Additionally, Lazio’s 25-year-old defender Mario Gila has emerged in Italian media as a target for Spurs, particularly as they look to enhance their defensive options. While the situation isn’t critical now, losing either Romero or Van de Ven could accelerate efforts to secure a new defender, especially considering Drăgușin’s imminent departure.
