Release Clause

Bournemouth continues to exceed expectations under the leadership of Andoni Iraola. Even after losing three key defenders—Dean Huijsen, Ilya Zabarnyi, and Milos Kerkez—to notable clubs such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Liverpool, respectively, the Cherries remain a formidable opponent, although their recent performance has dipped. While Iraola deserves credit for this resilience, a significant factor in Bournemouth’s competitiveness is the outstanding form of their star player, Antoine Semenyo.

This season, as depicted in the graphic above, the Ghanaian forward has accounted for 30.8% of Bournemouth’s goals, scoring eight times. However, retaining Semenyo may prove challenging for the club, as his contract includes a €74 million release clause, which can be activated during the first two weeks of the January transfer window. He has attracted attention from several teams, including Manchester United and Tottenham, although the 25-year-old committed to a new five-year contract at the Vitality Stadium in July. His current market value stands at €65 million. So, how impressive have Semenyo’s statistics been for Bournemouth, and what has his journey through football been like so far? Let’s explore.
Antoine Semenyo’s Goal Contributions Since Last Season
Looking back to the start of last season, only seven players in the entire Premier League can claim more goal contributions (goals + assists) than Semenyo. The Ghanaian has achieved 28 contributions in just 53 matches, surpassing players such as Cole Palmer (26) and Bukayo Saka (24). While Mohamed Salah (54) and Erling Haaland (48) have set high benchmarks, only Bryan Mbeumo (35), Bruno Fernandes (31), and Jarrod Bowen (29) have bettered Semenyo’s numbers among those outside European-bound clubs.

For a player at a club not usually competing for the top spots in English football, this achievement is remarkable, especially considering the skill of their manager. The interest from leading Premier League clubs remains high, and it appears highly probable that a club will activate his impending release clause, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham reportedly keen on his services. Semenyo’s journey has been a rapid ascent, with a unique path through the tiers of English football.
From Bath City to the Premier League – The Journey of Antoine Semenyo
Born in London to a father who was a player in the Ghanaian Premier League and a mother who holds French citizenship, Semenyo progressed through the youth system at Championship club Bristol City. His rise to prominence wasn’t immediate. In 2018, at the age of 18, he was loaned to Bath City, a sixth-tier team in the National League South. However, he made his Championship debut that same season, substituting in a 3-2 win against Sheffield United, making him the 10th youngest player to represent Bristol City in the Championship. In 2019, his first market value was set at €500k.
Subsequent loan spells at Newport County and Sunderland followed, but it was the 2020/21 season where Semenyo established himself as a regular starter at Bristol. The following season saw a surge in his performance, contributing to 20 goals in just 31 Championship matches for the Robins. In 2022, Bournemouth took a gamble and acquired him for €10.25 million, a deal that, even for a club known for its shrewd recruitment, stands out as one of their best. At the time, his market value was only €3 million, but in the next update, it surged to €65 million, proving that the Championship can yield exceptional talent, and Bournemouth has certainly discovered a gem in Semenyo.
