Leeds United invested over €113.7 million on 10 new players this summer after their promotion to the Premier League. However, one of their most astute moves was securing Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer in August. The 28-year-old striker has shown a remarkable turnaround this season, highlighted by his two goals in a convincing 4-1 win against Crystal Palace - Leeds' largest victory since their return to the top tier - extending their unbeaten streak to four matches.

With six goals in his last five appearances, Calvert-Lewin has emerged as one of the league's most prolific strikers, with only Erling Haaland holding a better record during this period. He also became the first player to score in five consecutive Premier League matches for Leeds since Mark Viduka in 2003. It’s no surprise that chants of “England’s number nine” echoed around Elland Road on Saturday night. Although Calvert-Lewin last represented his country in 2021, his current form may compel England manager Thomas Tuchel to consider him as a dark horse for the national squad.

Leeds are reaping the rewards of their summer gamble. While there is minimal financial risk associated with a free transfer, Calvert-Lewin’s age of 28 raised concerns about his fitness and ability to compete at the highest level. As the summer transfer window progressed, many clubs hesitated to take a chance on him. After struggling with only three goals in 26 appearances for Everton in the 2024/25 season, such hesitance appeared justified.

However, Calvert-Lewin has regained his sharpness and confidence in front of goal, proving to be a vital player for Leeds at this moment. When he plays without scoring, Leeds's record stands at one win, six losses, and two draws. Conversely, when he finds the net, they move to three wins, one loss, and two draws, demonstrating that his contributions significantly influence match outcomes. His market value is currently estimated at €15m.

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke spoke highly of Calvert-Lewin while also encouraging him to maintain his focus: “The numbers speak for themselves; he’s in exceptional form right now,” Farke noted. “[He is] among the best English strikers in this league. He has consistently shown his quality when fit, and at present, he is on track to be a top-class player for Leeds United. It’s important not to label someone as top-class after just a few weeks; consistency is key throughout the season.”

With the 2026 World Cup approaching in just six months, Calvert-Lewin’s inclusion in the 26-man squad would be a significant surprise. Nevertheless, considering other veterans like Ivan Toney, Danny Welbeck, and Callum Wilson could be in the mix, it would be unwise to dismiss the possibility of an in-form Calvert-Lewin compelling Tuchel to consider him for the squad if his scoring prowess continues.
