Are things heading in the wrong direction?

After a brief period of optimism for Tottenham, marked by convincing victories over Brentford and Slavia Prague, they received a stark wake-up call at the City Ground. Spurs suffered a 3-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, proving to be the weaker team throughout the match. This result leaves Thomas Frank's side sitting in 11th place, intensifying the pressure on the Dane.

Last season was certainly a rollercoaster for Tottenham. They secured their first trophy in 17 years by defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final, but endured a catastrophic domestic campaign, finishing 17th in the Premier League with only 38 points. This ultimately resulted in the dismissal of manager Ange Postecoglou. However, despite a somewhat promising start under Frank, Spurs find themselves in a worse position compared to this time last season, which raises alarm bells as it resembles relegation form.

Comparison: Tottenham 24/25 vs 25/26

Last season marked Tottenham's lowest points tally in Premier League history (38) and their poorest final position (17th). Expectations were that there would be an improvement this season. Yet, when comparing their record after 16 games this term to last season's, the North London club is actually performing worse. At this point last season, Spurs had accumulated 23 points and placed 10th; currently, they have 22 points, sitting in 11th. During the 2024/25 campaign, Postecoglou's team netted 36 goals and conceded 19, while under Frank, they have scored just 25 and conceded 21.

The expectation was that Frank would enhance Tottenham's defensive solidity, tactical versatility, and resilience. However, the reality has shown no significant improvement in results, and the style of play is less entertaining than what was seen under Postecoglou. With promoted teams showing greater resilience this season and a more competitive relegation battle unfolding, it’s entirely plausible that Tottenham could find themselves embroiled in such a struggle. There must be significant improvements in both results and performances.
