Arsenal boasts one of the most solid and well-organized defensive lines in the top five European leagues, and certainly in the Premier League. However, Mikel Arteta knows that without Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba, the Gunners lose some of their formidable edge. Gabriel is unparalleled aerially and is a significant threat in both attacking and defensive situations. His ability to neutralize top forwards like Erling Haaland gives teammates confidence, while Saliba is exceptional at reading plays, swiftly clearing dangers, and calming tense moments with ease.

The absence of these two key defenders is glaringly obvious. Arsenal had only started three Premier League matches without both players since Saliba's debut in the 2022/23 season. In their time together, the Gunners secured 71 victories and conceded only 75 goals over 99 games. The injury to Cristhian Mosquera, sidelining him for up to eight weeks, added to Arteta's woes as they prepared to take on a strong Aston Villa side.

With all three Arsenal center-backs unavailable for the match at Villa Park, Unai Emery seized the moment. Known for transitioning quickly, he aimed to exploit Arsenal's tendency to control the ball and commit players forward. Villa employed a strategy of long balls aimed at lone striker Ollie Watkins, supported by Morgan Rogers, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans—who were poised to capitalize on any resulting loose balls. This straightforward yet effective approach was particularly advantageous against Arsenal's makeshift pairing of Jurriën Timber and Piero Hincapié, both more accustomed to full-back roles.

As Villa gained momentum, their persistent crosses troubled the Arsenal defense. When Watkins leaped to meet a delivery from Rogers, Arsenal's attentiveness to the striker allowed Matty Cash to evade coverage, resulting in a powerful strike that found its way past David Raya.

Arsenal, however, threatened to equalize through attempts by Bukayo Saka and Ben White, and Eze's potential goal was flagged for offside during the buildup. Arteta responded at halftime with tactical changes, bringing on Viktor Gyökeres and Leandro Trossard for Eze and Merino, instantly improving team balance. Just six minutes into the second half, Martin Ødegaard and Saka connected, enabling Trossard to score from close range at the back post.

Villa continued to pose a threat on the counter, with Watkins challenging Hincapié in an engaging duel, although the Ecuadorian held his ground. As both teams ramped up their attacking efforts, the match intensity surged, resembling a fiercely contested showdown. Hincapié's improvement as the game progressed was evident, especially when he effectively contained Watkins, while Emi Martinez made a critical save to deny Ødegaard.

As chances flooded in, Villa looked increasingly likely to secure a win as the match neared its conclusion. Arteta might have felt fortunate to salvage a point given the injury-riddled squad. However, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Emiliano Buendia capitalized on indecision in the Arsenal defense, striking decisively to score. While no one could argue Arsenal deserved to lose, doing so without Gabriel and Saliba sends a reassuring message to the other 19 teams in the league, signaling that although Arsenal remains at the top, they are now a vulnerable side.
