Frustrated after just five months

After only five months at Manchester City, James Trafford is reportedly seeking a move away due to a lack of first-team opportunities. The 23-year-old goalkeeper rejoined City in the summer following a €31.2 million transfer from Burnley, where he had thrived. Trafford was under the impression that he would be the team’s first-choice keeper, but that promise has not been fulfilled after Pep Guardiola secured Gianluigi Donnarumma’s signature on deadline day.
Donnarumma, regarded as one of the top goalkeepers globally, has started every Premier League match since joining City. Trafford had dreams of challenging for the England number one spot against Jordan Pickford, but without regular playing time, that ambition seems unrealistic. He gained acclaim at Burnley, where he set a Championship record for the fewest goals conceded in a season (16) while recording 30 clean sheets. With several clubs interested in him, we’ve identified four potential destinations for Trafford in the January transfer window.
Possible Destinations for James Trafford
Tottenham
Guiglielmo Vicario has had a solid spell at Tottenham over the last 18 months, but his form has waned this season, leading to speculation about a move to Inter Milan. If Vicario departs, it could open the door for Trafford to join Spurs as a younger alternative.
Newcastle United
Newcastle is considered a frontrunner for Trafford’s signature, having pursued him last summer before City secured him. The Magpies had identified him as their prime target for the goalkeeper position but were outbid. Newcastle brought in Aaron Ramsdale on-loan from Southampton as competition for Nick Pope; however, neither have fully impressed, and Trafford could take the number one spot at a Champions League club.
Aston Villa
Emiliano Martinez’s intentions to leave Aston Villa were well-known last summer, but no substantial offers came in. The Argentine is seeking a new challenge and may not remain at Villa Park past January. Although he has resumed his role as first-choice and has been crucial to Villa’s success under Unai Emery, a significant bid for the 33-year-old could prompt Villa to invest in a younger keeper like Trafford.

Wolves
Trafford is inclined to stay in England to catch the eye of Thomas Tuchel, and Wolves have shown interest. However, with José Sá struggling this season and Sam Johnstone dealing with injuries, Wolves find themselves at risk of relegation. It remains questionable whether Trafford would be tempted to join a club facing difficulties.
Chelsea
Chelsea is also a potential destination, albeit a less conventional one, as Robert Sánchez has been performing well this season. The Blues have a history of exploring new market opportunities, and Trafford could fit well within their framework, especially with several former Man City youth players already in the Chelsea setup, potentially leading him to be their first-choice keeper for years to come.
