Arsenal breaks Premier League defensive record: Gunners go 108 games without conceding 3+ goals

With only eight goals conceded in 21 games across all competitions, and 14 clean sheets to their name, Arsenal’s defensive statistics are astonishing. They secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Brentford at the Emirates on Wednesday, further solidifying their grasp at the top of the Premier League table—now five points clear. Mikel Arteta’s squad has established one of the league’s most formidable defenses, highlighted by the exceptional center-back partnership of Gabriel and William Saliba. Their new substitutes, Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera, have also proven to be reliable defenders. Jurriën Timber is being hailed by pundits as the best full-back in the league, while Riccardo Calafiori effectively inverts from the left side.

On top of this, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ben White are ready to step in, showcasing Arsenal’s impressive defensive depth. This weekend marked another milestone—the Gunners have now gone 108 matches in all competitions without conceding three or more goals. The last team to do so against Arsenal was Luton Town, now in League One, during a thrilling 4-3 victory for Arsenal at Kenilworth Road in December 2023. Arsenal now holds the record for the longest stretch without conceding three or more goals in Premier League history. Let’s take a look at the top 10 longest streaks in this category.

The Longest Runs Without Conceding 3+ Goals

As noted, Arsenal currently leads with 108 games, a figure likely to rise further. The team that previously held the record is rather surprising. Manchester United had a streak of 107 games without conceding three or more goals, but not during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. Instead, it was under José Mourinho, covering a period from October 2016—when they lost 4-0 to Chelsea—to August 2018, when Brighton scored three in a 3-2 triumph over the Red Devils on the South Coast. This places them in second.

Manchester United also appears twice more in the top 10, maintaining a streak of 76 games without conceding three or more goals from 2007-08 and another 57-match streak from 2006-07, both during Ferguson’s tenure. Manchester City features in the top 10 on two occasions too, with a 68-game run under Pep Guardiola in 2022-23 and a 54-match streak between 2020 and 2021. Chelsea appears three times in the top 10—twice under Mourinho with 63 games in 2007-08 and 55 in 2004-05, and once in the late 1990s with 65 games in 1998-99. Arsenal rounds out the top 10 with a 54-match run during their invincible season in 2003-04.
