Mbappé 2nd & Ronaldo 7th: Most Champions League goals after five games

In another remarkable chapter of his career, Kylian Mbappé scored four goals for Real Madrid in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League. The Greek team shocked everyone by taking an early lead in the eighth minute, but Mbappé quickly demonstrated why he is considered one of the best in the sport. He achieved a hat-trick in just seven minutes, marking the second-fastest in Champions League history, trailing only Mohamed Salah, and helped Madrid gain the upper hand.

Remarkably, this marks Mbappé’s second hat-trick of the season in the competition and his fifth overall in the Champions League, placing him fourth on the all-time list. The 26-year-old currently leads the Champions League scoring chart with nine goals, and we’ve compiled a ranking of his achievements across the first five matches of the season.

Most Champions League goals in first five games

According to Transfermarkt data since the competition was rebranded as the Champions League in the 1992/93 season, Mbappé’s tally puts him joint second. Notably, four other players have also scored nine goals in their first five games of a Champions League season: Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Luiz Adriano, and Sébastien Haller. As illustrated in the graphic below, Lewandowski holds the record with an astounding ten goals for Bayern Munich during the 2019/20 season.

The Polish striker scored two pairs of goals against Tottenham and Olympiacos, before netting four in Bayern’s fifth match against Red Star, finishing that campaign with a total of 15 goals. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved the feat of scoring eight goals in the first five matches on two occasions while playing for Real Madrid, and Erling Haaland famously matched this at Red Bull Salzburg in 2019.
