As we reach the one-third mark of the league campaigns across Europe’s top divisions, we can begin to assess which clubs have made a strong start and which ones might want to wipe the slate clean. While multiple factors influence a team’s performance, few are as critical as the toll injuries take. Tactics and team spirit may help, but serious injuries to key players can derail all the hard work from pre-season, significantly impacting a team's progress. Let's explore which clubs have been most affected by injuries in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Ranking the clubs in Europe’s top five leagues by the total number of league games missed due to injuries, Tottenham Hotspur emerges as the unluckiest team. Regardless of Sunday’s heavy loss to Arsenal in the North London derby, Thomas Frank’s squad has faced the challenge of 15 players missing a total of 92 league games this season. Notably, this list includes key figures like Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Dominic Solanke.

Following the Premier League side, the Ligue 1 trio of Nice (11 players and 65 games missed), Monaco (12 players and 63 games missed), and Lorient (10 players and 63 games missed) are not far behind. Rounding out the top five is LaLiga’s Barcelona, who have dealt with 14 players missing a total of 62 games this season, making them the most injury-stricken team in Spain, with high-profile absentees like Marc-André ter Stegen, Gavi, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal.

Furthermore, Arne Slot’s squad ranks eighth with a total of 11 injuries contributing to 39 games missed this season. However, it’s doubtful that the manager can use injuries as a valid excuse for their poor performance, particularly since Chelsea (11 players injured, 50 games missed) and Arsenal (12 players injured, 49 games missed) are performing much better with more injuries to manage. While injuries can certainly disrupt a team’s season, they are not always the sole explanation for every dip in performance.
