This may be the heart of the discussion. While Phil Neville demonstrated remarkable versatility, often playing in midfield, his ability to take up positions as a wing-back on either side can’t be overlooked. In contrast, his brother Gary is more comfortable as a conventional full-back, focusing on defensive duties rather than pushing forward. Yet, Denis Irwin was exceptional at connecting with the attack, suggesting that his all-around skill set would also make him an effective wing-back.
Ryan Giggs certainly stands out as the most dynamic and creative player on our list. We recall him playing at full-back against West Ham United and executing those impressive sliding tackles to reclaim possession. However, we can’t help but wonder if he might be vulnerable to counter-attacks. Despite his dedication, it would be a challenge, and we also questioned whether David Beckham, though an outstanding player, might struggle with the demands of the role.
As for Anthony Elanga, the newest addition to our nominees, he likely possesses the stamina needed for the role, but like Giggs, he might lean too heavily towards the offensive side of play.
