Taking Shape

All nations qualified for the 2026 World Cup, including Portugal, Senegal, Qatar, and others

The countdown has officially started! Just seven months remain until the World Cup returns, marking its return to the traditional summer schedule in Britain. Next June, the tournament will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, making it the largest edition in the tournament’s history with up to 48 countries competing for the most prestigious trophy in international football. Historically, only eight nations have ever lifted the World Cup trophy.

In the previous edition held in Qatar’s winter, Argentina celebrated their third World Cup victory, with captain Lionel Messi finally securing the one accolade that had previously eluded him. As we approach the event, which will kick off at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, 32 nations have already qualified. Let’s take a look at who’s made the cut.

First up are the three host nations: the USA, Canada, and Mexico, who automatically qualified and did not need to partake in the selection process. Next summer, they’ll host matches in their own countries. Recently, the South American qualifying group concluded, confirming Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay’s places. Bolivia will also have the opportunity to qualify, but must win a play-off match to do so.

From the Asian qualifying matches, Iran, Uzbekistan, Jordan, South Korea, Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Australia have locked in their spots for North America. In Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and South Africa have secured their places, while New Zealand has made their long journey from Oceania to the World Cup. England was the first European nation to qualify, with France, Croatia, Portugal, and Norway soon to follow. Among these teams, Uzbekistan, Jordan, and Cape Verde will each be making their World Cup debut in North America.
