England's manager, Thomas Tuchel, is known for his surprises during squad announcements, and Friday was no different with the inclusion of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. The 22-year-old has been in excellent form for the Cherries in this season's Premier League, clearly catching Tuchel's eye. "He had an outstanding performance at the [U21] Euros," Tuchel stated on the national team's website. "He won the title, and Lee [Carsley] praised him highly. He excelled in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson, who is now a regular starter for us. It’s impressive to see him take another step and become a consistent starter for Bournemouth, who are performing above expectations in the top third of the league."

Scott has been an essential part of Bournemouth's unexpected rise to fifth place in the league, surprising many in English football. After the summer transfer window saw the club part ways with seven senior players for a total of €238 million—including key defenders like Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, and Milos Kerkez, as well as forward Dango Ouattara—many expected a challenging season ahead for manager Andoni Iraola's squad. However, Bournemouth has made a remarkable comeback, with Scott playing a significant role in this turnaround.

In the first ten league matches of the season, Scott started in all but one, quickly establishing himself as Iraola’s preferred holding midfielder. His exceptional close control and impressive dribbling ability provide the team with much-needed composure and safety in midfield, qualities often reserved for more seasoned players. Coupled with his excellent passing range and instinctive talent for orchestrating attacks, Scott is rapidly emerging as one of the Premier League's most promising central midfielders. According to Opta, no other Bournemouth midfielder has recorded as many dribbles or won as many ground duels as this 22-year-old talent, highlighting his capability to thrive defensively as well as offensively.

This recognition serves as validation for Scott, who fought hard for his place in Bournemouth’s starting eleven after his €23 million move to the club in the summer of 2023. His debut season was hampered by a knee injury, restricting him to just 11 Premier League starts and 12 appearances off the bench. Unfortunately, another injury—a muscle tear—eliminated him from 16 consecutive league matches during his second season. Nevertheless, Iraola placed his trust in the young midfielder, and by season’s end, Scott had solidified his status as a regular starter.

Having first emerged at Bristol City in the Championship in 2021, Scott has faced various challenges but has consistently risen to the occasion. His market value has climbed to an impressive €25 million. Despite the setbacks caused by injuries at Bournemouth, this England call-up reaffirms that Scott is a standout prospect in the Premier League. It is unlikely to be the last time Tuchel turns to him to strengthen his national squad. With continued success at Bournemouth, Scott could potentially become a regular starter for the Three Lions in the future.
