The discussion over which teams currently stand as Europe's best is always heated, especially at the start of the season when performances can be unpredictable. The new Champions League format adds another layer of complexity, making it even harder to gauge team standings. Given the varying standards across leagues, we at Transfermarkt have created a top-five league table to provide some clarity. We will be updating the rankings of the top 20 teams from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 weekly. To ensure fairness, especially for the German and French leagues with fewer teams and matches, the table is based on points-per-game (ppg).

Bayern Munich currently leads with an impressive 3.00 ppg, maintaining a perfect winning streak in their first eight matches. Following closely is Real Madrid from La Liga, boasting 2.70 ppg after their recent El Clásico win. Arsenal, the Premier League leaders, hold third place with 2.44 ppg. RB Leipzig, another Bundesliga team, claims fourth with a record of 2.38 ppg. Serie A leaders Napoli are now fifth, also at 2.33 ppg, edging out their rivals Roma on goal difference. Stuttgart from Germany rounds out the seventh spot with a solid 2.25 ppg.

Completing the top ten are Barcelona (2.20 ppg, +13 goal difference), Borussia Dortmund (2.13 ppg, +8 goal difference), and Bayer Leverkusen (2.13 ppg, +7 goal difference). Paris Saint-Germain currently sits in 11th position with a ppg of 2.10. The only other Premier League club in the top 20 is Bournemouth, placed 16th with 2.00 ppg. Notably, five Bundesliga teams feature in the top 10.
