The new chapter at Roma under the highly regarded Gian Piero Gasperini has sparked considerable hope, yet Evan Ferguson has faced a challenging beginning. The young talent arrived in the historic Italian city with aspirations of reigniting his faltering career and tapping into his undeniable potential.

Ferguson first gained attention at Brighton, where he was notably predicted to become a £100 million player, his hat-trick against Newcastle United marking a standout moment in his early career. However, he experienced a setback last season, with an unproductive loan at West Ham where he failed to score, leaving him at a crossroads. Struggling to secure playing time at Brighton under Fabian Hürzeler, he sought a fresh start at Roma, but his difficulties have persisted in Italy.

Evan Ferguson: Start at Roma and Gasperini's Critique

As Serie A's midweek fixtures approach, Roma currently occupies second place, tied on points with league leaders Napoli. After experiencing tremendous success at Atalanta—including securing their first major trophy in 61 years with the Europa League in 2024—Gasperini has taken the helm at Giallorossi. Despite Gasperini's impactful start at the Stadio Olimpico, Ferguson has not yet found his stride. The 21-year-old has gone nine games without finding the net and was an unused substitute in the recent victory against Sassuolo.

This comes shortly after Gasperini publicly criticized Ferguson following Roma’s Europa League loss to Viktoria Plzen. "Evan Ferguson has participated in 9 out of 10 games," stated Gasperini. “He needs to perform better on the pitch, and thus far, his performances have not met expectations. Honestly, it was the first time I saw him train properly yesterday. He’s transitioning from the Premier League, where he didn’t play much last season. We must be patient with him." Despite the tough words, Gasperini has given Ferguson more playing time than any other striker this season, though his patience appears to be running thin. It's worth noting that the Brighton loanee has found the net three times for Ireland this season.

Evan Ferguson’s Market Value Trends

Ferguson's recent challenges are not confined to his time at Roma; he has made only ten club starts in the past two seasons. Injuries have hampered his progress, but he was once regarded as one of Europe's most promising young strikers. After making an impressive debut in 2023, his market value soared from €1 million to €65 million within the year.

As illustrated in the graphic above, Ferguson’s value has consistently declined since reaching his peak of €65 million. Currently, the Ireland international is valued at €25 million, maintaining this figure following the latest Serie A market value update. Interestingly, he ranks as the fourth most valuable player at Roma and is eager to turn his fortunes around to ensure a fruitful tenure in Italy.
