Former Arsenal player Jack Wilshere has been appointed as the new head coach of Luton Town, marking his first permanent role in management. The 33-year-old assumes the position immediately and will collaborate with the experienced English Football League veteran Chris Powell, who will serve as his assistant. Wilshere steps in to replace Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed from the League One club earlier this year, and he will lead his first game against Mansfield Town on Saturday. In a statement on the club's official website, Wilshere expressed: “It’s a huge honour and privilege to be named Luton Town manager. It feels like a full-circle moment for me. I was just eight years old when I first came to Luton as a boy, so it seems destined that my first full-time managerial position is at this club. I couldn't be happier to be here – I can’t wait to manage this team.”

Upon taking charge at Kenilworth Road, Wilshere becomes the third-youngest manager in the EFL, which includes the Premier League, at the age of 33. Brighton's boss Fabian Hürzeler, who is 32, took over in 2024 from Roberto De Zerbi and continues to be the youngest manager among the 92 EFL teams. Additionally, Southampton's Will Still will celebrate his 33rd birthday tomorrow (October 14) and ranks second on the list after joining the Championship club this summer.

Wilshere is not alone among former Premier League players stepping into coaching roles – he is joined by ex-Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason, 34, who recently took over at West Brom. Aston Villa favorite Conor Hourihane is now coaching Barnsley in League One, while Tom Cleverley, previously with Watford and Manchester United, is leading Plymouth Argyle, which competes in the same division as Wilshere's Luton. Others in the top 10 include Martin Paterson, Alan Sheehan, Kieran McKenna, and John Mousinho.

Wilshere enjoyed a distinguished playing career, emerging from Arsenal's academy at 16 and making 197 appearances for the Gunners before injuries impacted his time at the Emirates Stadium. Following his departure, he played for West Ham United, Bournemouth, and Aarhus GF in Denmark before retiring at the age of 30. After gaining experience with Arsenal's youth teams, he eventually managed the Under-18s. His next step was with Norwich City, where he served as interim boss at the end of the 2024-25 season. Now, Wilshere aims to put his mark on the Hatters and work to lift them from their current slump, as they find themselves in 11th place after three defeats in five matches.
