Scottish Premiership Market Value Changes: Significant Downgrades for Celtic and Rangers

The Scottish Premiership has become the latest European league to receive an interim market value update from Transfermarkt, with 103 players from the league seeing their market values adjusted. Major names in Scottish football have experienced fluctuations as the season unfolds dramatically. Hearts emerged as the biggest beneficiaries with a squad value increase of €2.02 million, while Aberdeen and Celtic saw declines of €1.1 million and €4.5 million, respectively.

Celtic, the reigning champions, have experienced some of the most notable changes as Brendan Rodgers’ side struggles in Europe and currently holds second place in the league table. “Fans are frustrated with the club’s lack of summer investment and the sale of key players, leading to a sense of compromises within the team,” commented UK Area Manager Stefan Bienkowski. “While they remain capable of clinching the league title, it’s evident that Rodgers is dissatisfied with his current squad.”

Notable downgrades include Kasper Schmeichel (from €500k to €300k), Paulo Bernardo (€5.5m to €5m), and Jota (€8m to €7m), among others. New signings Michel-Ange Balikwisha (from €7m to €6m) and Kieran Tierney (from €9m to €8m) also reflect the struggle within the squad. However, there were positive adjustments for new signings Shin Yamada (from €800k to €1m) and Sebastian Tounekti (from €1.2m to €4m), aligning their values more closely with their transfer fees.

Rangers, after parting ways with head coach Russell Martin due to a poor start that leaves them in eighth place, have also seen a number of their players lose market value. “Rangers have improved in their transfer strategy by bringing in younger talent, but they still lag behind their competition,” said Bienkowski. “While Martin’s time at the helm was turbulent, the upcoming manager’s ability to revitalize this squad will be crucial for their success.”

Rangers experienced downgrades for several players, including Joe Rothwell (from €1.8m to €1.5m) and Nasser Djiga (from €10m to €8m), reflecting underperformance. Yet, there were some positives as Nicolas Raskin’s value increased from €10m to €12m, and Bojan Miovski (from €2.5m to €3m) and others saw their values rise.

Mixed Results Across the Premiership

Other prominent clubs have also seen interesting market value changes. At Pittodrie, Aberdeen’s tough start resulted in significant downgrades for players such as Nicolas Milanovic (from €850k to €600k) and Kevin Nisbet (from €2.5m to €2m). Conversely, young talents like Kenan Bilalovic (from €250k to €500k) and Jack Milne (from €600k to €800k) have experienced upward adjustments. Meanwhile, Hearts’ strong performance at the top of the table has contributed to increases in market values for players like Craig Halkett (from €200k to €300k) and Cláudio Braga (from €500k to €1.5m).

Several promising young players from across the Scottish Premiership have seen their values rise in line with their performances. Hibernian goalkeeper Murray Johnson (from €50k to €100k), Dundee defender Luke Graham (from €125k to €400k), and Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson (from €1.5m to €1.8m) are key examples of emerging talents who could see further increases if they maintain their form throughout the season.

Understanding Transfermarkt Market Values

Transfermarkt calculates market values using various pricing models, heavily influenced by the discussions and evaluations from its community members. These market values should not be equated directly with transfer fees, as they represent an expected market value in a free market rather than a fixed price.

Factors such as individual transfer circumstances and situational conditions are considered in determining these market values. Transfermarkt does not employ an algorithm for this calculation (you can find more detailed definitions of market value here).
