Liga Portugal has become the first of the major European leagues to update its market values. A total of 69 players from Portugal's top division have had their market values revised in this latest intermediary update. At the top of the rankings, there are minimal changes: Morten Hjulmand (Sporting) and Samu Aghehowa (Porto) continue to lead as the league's most valuable players, both valued at €50 million. Notably, the most significant changes occur outside the top ten.

The recent updates primarily reflect the impact of new arrivals. One such example is Porto's new defender Jakub Kiwior. The Polish center-back, who was transferred from Arsenal last summer, is currently on loan at Porto, which holds an option to buy him permanently for €17 million. Consequently, Kiwior's market value has dropped from €28 million to €25 million. “It’s crucial to highlight that this devaluation is not indicative of his performance on the field but is directly related to the transfer fee paid by FC Porto,” said Gonçalo Tristão Santos, Area Manager for Portugal.

However, not all news from Porto was negative. New signing Victor Froholt emerged as one of the big winners in the market value update, with his value soaring by 83.3% from €12 million to €22 million. “Froholt, a promising young midfielder at just 19, has already secured his place in the starting XI and has been among the team's standout players, which justifies his increase to €22 million,” Tristão Santos noted.

Market Values in Portugal: Suárez and Ivanović Rising – Two Braga Stars Highlighted

Among the new signings, Luis Suárez has achieved a significant market value increase, becoming the biggest percentage winner with a 175% rise. The 27-year-old Colombian striker, initially valued at €8 million, was signed for €22.2 million by Sporting, justifying his new valuation. “Suárez has made an immediate impact on the team, scoring several goals in Portugal,” Tristão Santos explained. After netting four goals and adding two assists in his first six Liga Portugal matches, Suárez’s value has surged to €22 million.

New signings continue to dominate the updates, with Franjo Ivanović also seeing a notable market value increase. The Croatian forward moved to Benfica from Union Saint-Gilloise for €22.8 million this summer, which significantly influenced his new valuation. “Despite not having a substantial impact at Benfica yet, Ivanović has scored some goals. Being a young player with potential and having transferred for €22.8 million warranted an increase in his valuation from €13 million to €20 million,” Tristão Santos remarked.

The transfer fees have also affected the market values of two new players at Braga. Pau Víctor, acquired from Barcelona for €12 million, and Mario Dorgeles, who moved from Danish club Nordsjælland for €11 million, both saw their evaluations rise from €4 million to €10 million. “Their new market values reflect their respective transfer fees as they became the most expensive signings in SC Braga's history,” said Tristão Santos. With a 150% increase in market value, Víctor and Dorgeles are among the ten players in Liga Portugal with the largest percentage gains.

Understanding Transfermarkt's Market Values

Transfermarkt's market values are determined using various pricing models. A key contributor is the Transfermarkt community, where members collaborate to discuss and assess player valuations in depth. Importantly, these market values should not be equated with transfer fees.

The intention is not to predict a precise price but rather to estimate a player’s expected value in a free market. Factors such as individual transfer modalities and situational conditions play a role in determining these market values. For further insights, please refer to our detailed market value definition.
