“To me, it’s a hat-trick,” said Harry Kane, Bayern Munich’s star striker, after netting three goals against Hoffenheim last Saturday. “But I understand it’s a bit different here in Germany.” In the Bundesliga, a real hat-trick refers to three consecutive goals in a single half, while Kane scored in the 44th, 48th, and 77th minutes, earning him a Dreierpack during Bayern's 4-1 victory. This marked Kane’s ninth hat-trick since joining Bayern Munich two years ago. Following his performance against Werder Bremen on Friday, he averages a hat-trick every 7.6 games in the Bundesliga.

This past Friday, although Kane didn’t score a hat-trick in Bayern's 4-0 win over Bremen, he still set a remarkable record by becoming the fastest player in the modern era to reach 100 goals in a top-five league with his club. “What Kane has accomplished for Bayern Munich in the last two years is incredible,” commented Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl. “He’s a personality on the field, always eager for the ball and supporting his teammates. Kane is a true fighter and leader.” Kane’s ninth hat-trick positions him among Bundesliga greats; former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge took 310 matches to achieve this feat, while Dieter Müller did it in 303 games.

Other Bundesliga legends such as Horst Hrubesch (seven hat-tricks), Ulf Kirsten (seven), Uwe Seeler (six), and Rudi Völler (five) couldn’t match Kane’s record. In fact, only six players have managed more hat-tricks than Kane in the Bundesliga. Statistically, Kane has a better average of hat-tricks than record-holder Gerd Müller (32, at one every 13 matches) and his predecessor Robert Lewandowski (16, at one every 24 matches).

Harry Kane: The Hat-trick Hero on the International Stage

When we look at other top-five leagues, Kane’s pace for hat-tricks continues to impress. Since the establishment of these leagues—Germany, England (Premier League since 1991), Italy, Spain, and France—only two players with 20 or more matches have a better hat-trick ratio than Kane. Between 1933 and 1948, Isidro Lángara scored 105 goals in 90 La Liga appearances, achieving 13 hat-tricks (one every 6.9 games). Since joining Monaco in January, Mika Biereth has scored three hat-tricks in 21 games (one every seven games). Cristiano Ronaldo’s (34 hat-tricks in La Liga) ratio is one every 8.6 games, Romário (five for Barcelona) one every 11.4 games, Erling Haaland (eight for Manchester City) one every 12.8 games, and Lionel Messi (36 for Barcelona) one every 14.4 games. All players mentioned (except Romário, who played 57 La Liga matches) have significantly more league appearances than Kane.

After finishing as the Bundesliga’s top scorer last season, Kane has already netted ten goals in the first five matches of this season. If he maintains his form, one question arises: can he surpass Lewandowski’s single-season record of 41 goals set during the 2020/21 season, surpassing Gerd Müller’s previous record of 40 goals? At the time, Lewandowski had one more goal than Kane after the first five games. Could Kane potentially break Lewandowski's record? What is his ceiling? Is it conceivable that a Bundesliga player could approach 50 or even 60 goals in a single season?

“I don't typically set limits for myself; I just want to keep going,” Kane stated to Sky when posed this question. “There are times when things might not go as hoped for a striker, but right now, I’m riding the momentum and enjoying it. I feel good and trust that I’ll get my chances. A big shoutout to the boys. I’m working hard for the team, and the goals will follow.” His hat-tricks have certainly contributed to his reputation, earning him the nickname ‘Hat-trick Harry’ in Germany. “They used to call me Hat-trick Harry in school,” Kane remarked when asked about the nickname.

100 Goals in 104 Games for Bayern: Harry Kane Sets Another Record

Beyond the hat-trick record, Kane has achieved several milestones. He is the first player in Bundesliga history to successfully convert all 18 of his penalty kicks and the fastest to reach 70 goals, achieving this in just 67 games. This past Friday against Werder Bremen, Kane needed only two additional goals to hit 100 across all competitions for Bayern. Up to that weekend, he had already amassed 98 goals in 103 matches. The previous record for the fastest 100 goals scored by a player for one club in Europe’s top five leagues (since the establishment of the EPL in 1991) was jointly held by Manchester City’s Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid, both achieving it in 105 matches. Kane has now shattered that record.

How does Kane compare to players from before the top five leagues was established? The graphic above shows that only eight players have managed to reach 100 goals faster than Haaland and Ronaldo. While records from the pre-modern era can be somewhat inconsistent, the Transfermarkt database highlights some remarkable players who may have reached this milestone even quicker than Kane. For example, we mentioned Lángara earlier; he achieved it in just 77 matches. Other legends like Just Fontaine needed 93 matches for Stade Reims, Oskar Rohr struck it in 94 matches for Strasbourg, Mariano Martín did it in 99 for Barcelona, and both Ferenc Puskás (Real Madrid) and Gunnar Andersson (Olympique Marseille) reached it in 100 games. Manuel Badenes scored 100 goals in 101 matches for Valencia, and László Kubala did it in 103 games for Barcelona. With his two goals against Werder Bremen, Kane has established a new record.
