Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou likely found himself reflecting on Antony, the winger from Betis, while making the journey back from Seville on Wednesday night. The former Manchester United player played a pivotal role in denying the Premier League side their first away win in European competitions since 1980, as the match ended in a 2-2 draw in the Europa League.

Despite Forest dominating the game, it was Antony's brilliant footwork that led to Cedric Bakambu scoring the opening goal just 15 minutes in. Following a quick brace from Forest striker Igor Jesus that swung the momentum back to the English side, Antony made his mark again, equalizing with a well-placed shot five minutes before the final whistle. While his performance may have surprised Premier League fans, it’s something Betis supporters have come to expect from their standout winger.

Since joining Betis on loan during the January transfer window and making a permanent switch for €22 million this summer, Antony has been exceptional for the Seville club. Across all competitions, he has appeared in 29 matches, netting an impressive 10 goals and providing six assists, along with numerous dribbles, crosses, and key passes. His performance stands out not only within Betis but also ranks favorably among players in Europe’s top five leagues. As illustrated in the table above, although Antony may not yet rival stars like Ousmane Dembélé or Raphinha, he currently ranks 21st among all midfielders and wingers in Europe for goal contributions since his arrival at Betis.

This starkly contrasts his time at Old Trafford, where he made 96 appearances, contributing only 12 goals and five assists. The comparison highlights a significant turnaround; while playing for Manchester United, Antony averaged just 0.28 goals and assists per 90 minutes across all competitions. Since moving to Spain, that figure has more than doubled, as he now averages 0.60 goals and assists per 90 for Betis.

As an added note of frustration for Manchester United's new manager Rúben Amorim amid a challenging start to the season, Antony has outperformed the current and recent stars at United. Since his arrival at Betis, only Bruno Fernandes has accumulated more goal contributions. Although United fans might be optimistic about their new signings—Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha—it remains to be seen if any can match the contributions of Betis' star winger this year.
