The midfield is often regarded as the most crucial area on the pitch, significantly influencing the outcome of matches. The ability to control the game’s tempo has become vital for top managers, who have adopted various strategies to assert dominance. Johan Cruyff famously introduced the concept of inverted full-backs to create overloads in central areas, a tactic that has gained widespread acceptance in modern football thanks to Pep Guardiola, one of Cruyff’s most renowned admirers.

Over the years, formations have shifted towards prioritizing midfielders. In England, many clubs initially preferred the 4-4-2 setup before transitioning to the now-favored 4-3-3. In a recent Transfermarkt analysis, we looked at which clubs boast the most valuable collection of players in each position. While Real Madrid excels in attacking talent and Arsenal leads in defensive quality, the question remains: which club has the richest pool of midfielders? Let’s explore.

Which club has the most valuable collection of midfielders?

Real Madrid boasts the most valuable midfield lineup globally, with a total worth of €670m from their seven first-team midfielders, exceeding second-placed Liverpool by over €100m. Jude Bellingham stands out as the world’s most valuable midfielder at €180m, followed by Federico Valverde at €130m. Despite a challenging start at Anfield, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz is valued at €140m, with Alexis Mac Allister at €100m.

Barcelona ranks third, with a total of nine midfielders valued at €530m, including their highest-rated player, Pedri, at €140m. Chelsea and Arsenal round out the top five, showcasing the English Premier League’s dominance with six clubs in the top ten. Bayern Munich represents the Bundesliga, while PSG is the sole club from Ligue 1. Notably, there are no Serie A teams listed among the top ten.
