Rangers manager Russell Martin is at risk of making unwanted history if he is dismissed following another disappointing defeat on Saturday. The 39-year-old watched in frustration as his team fell 2-0 at home to Hearts at Ibrox, leaving Rangers languishing in 10th place in the Scottish Premiership. Under Martin's leadership, the team has yet to secure a league victory, having played five matches and drawn four. Although he recently surpassed the 100-day milestone in charge since his appointment on June 5, his ability to navigate the troubled waters in Glasgow seems increasingly precarious.

If he were to be let go in the near future, Martin's tenure would become the shortest of any permanently appointed manager in the club's history. As of September 13, his reign stands at 101 days, significantly shorter than Paul Le Guen's 186-day attempt in the role. Following Saturday's disappointing result, Martin's points-per-game average has plummeted to the third-lowest in club history, with only 1.27 points garnered from his 11 matches at the helm. This puts him behind his predecessor Barry Ferguson, who averaged 1.5 PPG, and only surpasses caretaker manager Kenny McDowall's 1.2 PPG from December 2013 to March 2014.

Calls for Martin's dismissal have intensified after Rangers were eliminated from the Europa League qualifying stages by Club Brugge, suffering a 3-1 defeat at home followed by a heavy 6-0 loss in Belgium, which prompted angry chants from fans directed towards the former Southampton manager. Following the recent defeat to Hearts, the situation may compel the club to take action. Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd, reporting for Sky Sports, noted that fans were chanting for Martin's sacking. Boyd described the team's performance as "terrible," stating: "One team looked organized defensively and in-sync going forward, and that was Hearts. Rangers, at home, failed to lay a glove on Hearts." He further remarked: "I don't see any way back for Russell Martin. You can show some new managers some grace if there's evidence of improvement, but it's actually heading in the opposite direction."

After Saturday's match, Martin faced tough questions during his post-match press conference. Addressing the fans' dissatisfaction, he stated: "They're entitled to their opinion. I can't criticize that. The fans are always entitled to their opinion. I don't think many of them wanted me here in the first place." He also acknowledged uncertainty regarding whether the Rangers board would offer him the much-feared vote of confidence and refrained from resigning: "I don’t know what the board will do. We'll see, won’t we? They’ve been great up until now. All of them. So we’ll see," he remarked, before asserting that he had not been instructed to meet with the board to discuss his future.
