Former Sevilla Player Joins Liga MX
Anthony Martial has become the latest high-profile addition to Liga MX team CF Monterrey. The French international finalized his medical examination in Greece on Thursday night before making the move to Monterrey. According to reports from Mexican outlet TUDN, the club is set to pay $4.5 million (€3.8 million) to secure the striker’s services from AEK Athens. Both teams confirmed the transfer late Friday evening.
Martial made his move to the Greek Super League club last summer after his contract with Manchester United ended. During his time at AEK, he recorded nine goals and two assists in 24 appearances across all competitions. However, due to his high salary, AEK decided to offload him this summer and did not include him in their UEFA Conference League roster.
Martial’s financial demands had previously impeded a potential transfer to Liga MX. Reports indicated that Pumas was interested in signing him this summer but could not agree on personal terms. On the other hand, Monterrey, one of the richest teams in Concacaf, was able to meet his salary expectations without any issues.
Joining Forces with Sergio Ramos – What to Expect at Monterrey
With an estimated market value of €7 million, Martial will be the most highly valued player in the CF Monterrey squad. Other top players include former LaLiga stars Sergio Canales and Lucas Ocampos, both valued at €6 million. The standout member of the team, however, is Sergio Ramos, who joined Monterrey on a free transfer last February after his contract with Sevilla expired.
Martial will become the fifth player in Monterrey’s lineup with ties to Sevilla. In addition to Ramos, Ocampos and Óliver Torres also played for the LaLiga club, while Mexican winger Jesús Corona has a history with Sevilla as well. Canales, meanwhile, has played for local rivals Real Betis.
