Future Brazil star?
Hull City has officially signed João Mendes, the son of Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho, on a one-year contract. At just 20 years old, Mendes already has some experience in English football, having played for Burnley’s U21 squad last season, although he has yet to make his professional debut.
Mendes regularly featured for Burnley’s youth side after relocating to England when his aspirations of following in his father’s legendary footsteps at Barcelona fell through in 2024. He had joined Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy in 2023 after impressive trials, including one against Manchester United, but was released just 18 months later.
Ronaldinho’s Son Joins Hull City
Ronaldinho, Mendes’ father, was known as one of the most naturally talented players of his generation, making 207 appearances for Barça. He earned 97 caps for Brazil, winning the World Cup in 2002, and famously claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2005. While it may be difficult for Mendes to replicate his father’s illustrious career, he expressed enthusiasm about his new opportunity with Hull City, where he will be part of the U21 squad.
“I am really happy and excited. I think it is going to be a great season. I play as a right winger or an attacking midfielder. I consider myself a fast, explosive, and creative player. I feel it’s beneficial to experience different styles of football. The game in Brazil is one way, in Spain it’s another, and England has its own unique style. This variety really enhances your overall game,” he stated.
