Christian Eriksen has secured a new club as Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg announced his signing on Wednesday. The 33-year-old Danish international has signed a contract that runs until 2027, having been a free agent since his tenure with Manchester United ended at the close of the previous season. With a market value of €4 million, Eriksen was one of the most valuable free agents still available after the European transfer window closed.
“We’re thrilled to have this opportunity come to us on short notice,” said Wolfsburg sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “Bringing in Christian Eriksen means acquiring a player with extensive experience and proven quality at the highest levels. His vast knowledge and leadership will be particularly beneficial for our younger players. We’ve made significant structural changes this summer, bringing in several promising young talents, and Christian will perfectly complement our seasoned captain, Max Arnold. He’s a genuine leader who can influence the game both on and off the pitch.”
Eriksen expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “VfL Wolfsburg is my first club in the Bundesliga, and I’m truly excited about this new adventure. I believe we can accomplish great things together. My discussions with the club officials were very positive. I got the sense that Paul Simonis has a clear vision for the team and for me. Plus, having several familiar faces from the Danish national team in the squad makes Wolfsburg even more appealing to me.”
Christian Eriksen: Expanding Wolfsburg’s Danish Presence
After his contract with Manchester United ended in June, Eriksen has been maintaining his fitness at Malmö FF in Sweden. Having already played in Italy’s Serie A and the Premier League, the Bundesliga marks Eriksen’s third of the five top European leagues. As the record holder for Denmark’s national team with 144 appearances, Eriksen is the latest in a line of Danish players to join Wolfsburg, becoming the 17th Danish player in the club’s history. Currently, the squad features six players from Denmark, a logical trend considering that the club’s transfer strategy is led by managing director and former FC Copenhagen boss, Peter Christiansen.
Eriksen has had a distinguished career, primarily at Tottenham Hotspur (305 matches), followed by Ajax (163 matches), and Manchester United (107 matches). Notably, he reached a market value peak of €100 million in 2019. Following a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland, Eriksen has had to play with a defibrillator since 2021. This medical device restricts him from playing in some countries, including Italy; however, it is allowed in Germany, as seen with players like Daley Blind during his time at Bayern Munich.
