On Monday, Newcastle United announced the signing of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa as their final move on transfer deadline day. This transfer, one of the most protracted sagas in the window, sees the 29-year-old officially join St James’ Park for a reported fee of €63.5 million, split into half upfront and the remainder due next year. Nonetheless, Newcastle sources claim the actual fee is nearer to €57 million, with the potential to rise to €63.5 million. Additionally, a 25% sell-on clause has been included in the agreement.

“I’m thrilled to be here and to join one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs,” Wissa stated in a club announcement on Newcastle’s website. “I’m very excited to wear the black and white shirt. I have dreams and faith, and I will do my utmost to make them a reality. I can’t wait to get started.” Head coach Eddie Howe remarked, “Yoane is a player we’ve admired for quite some time, and we’re extremely pleased to have him join us. He brings proven Premier League quality, showcased not only by his goal tally but also the essential contributions he makes for the team. Yoane’s style of play will excite our supporters and enhance our tactical approach—he possesses pace, power, and an excellent work ethic. His addition significantly strengthens our squad.”

At this price, Wissa becomes the third most expensive transfer in Premier League history for a player aged 28 or older. The only two higher transfers are Romelu Lukaku’s €113 million move from Inter Milan to Chelsea at age 28 and Casemiro’s €70.7 million switch from Real Madrid to Manchester United when he was 30. Notably, Wissa will turn 29 just two days from now, on September 3. The Congolese forward has demonstrated his Premier League quality, netting 19 goals last season, yet the transfer fee is quite substantial for a player of his age.
