The lengthy transfer saga appears to be coming to a close, as Chelsea is on the verge of finalizing a deal for Alejandro Garnacho. Reports indicate that Chelsea and Manchester United have reached an agreement on a €46.2 million fee, which includes a 10% sell-on clause. The two Premier League clubs have been in discussions for several weeks to settle on a mutually acceptable price amid slight differences in valuation.
Garnacho has consented to personal terms with Chelsea and is currently in London for his medical examination before the official announcement. The young Argentine winger has expressed a strong desire to join Stamford Bridge this summer, following a fallout with Rúben Amorim after the Europa League final. At Chelsea, the 20-year-old will vie for a starting position on the left wing against Jamie Gittens and Pedro Neto in Enzo Maresca’s preferred 4-3-3 formation, marking a significant transfer for Manchester United.
Alejandro Garnacho’s Position Among Manchester United’s Record Sales
Garnacho made the move to Manchester United from Atlético Madrid as a 16-year-old in 2020 for just €465k, so this transfer to Chelsea represents a substantial profit. Additionally, Garnacho qualifies as a homegrown player, which is significant under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations. During his time at Old Trafford, he has recorded 48 goal contributions in 144 appearances, and now he aims to enhance his attacking performance at Chelsea as he continues to evolve as a player.
As illustrated in the graphic above, Garnacho will become Manchester United’s fourth-highest sale in history at €46.2 million, surpassing David Beckham, who transferred to Real Madrid for €37.5 million in 2003. Cristiano Ronaldo’s €94 million transfer to the same club in 2009 remains the record sale for United, and it is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.
