English Championship club Middlesbrough has acquired center-back Adilson Malanda from Charlotte FC for $8 million (€6.9 million), plus additional performance-related bonuses. With this transfer, Malanda joins Patrick Agyemang, who recently moved to Derby County, as one of the most expensive exits in Charlotte FC history. To continue his development, Malanda will be loaned back to Charlotte FC for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season.
“Adilson has been a true professional since joining Charlotte, and we worked collaboratively to create a deal that benefited both the club and the player,” said Charlotte FC General Manager Zoran Krneta. “We received several strong offers from top clubs, but this agreement permits us to retain him for the rest of the season as we strive for a top-four finish. His journey demonstrates that Charlotte FC is an ideal environment for young players to grow and attract international interest.”
Charlotte FC originally brought Malanda on board from Ligue 2 club Rodez in 2022. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most dependable center-backs in the MLS. Standing at 6’4″ and possessing remarkable athleticism, Malanda has contributed two goals and two assists over 94 appearances in all competitions. This season alone, he has netted one goal in 27 matches, helping Charlotte aim for a spot in the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs.
