Few clubs in European football have made such a swift start this summer as Premier League champions Liverpool. Last month, the club announced the signing of Bayer Leverkusen's playmaker Florian Wirtz for a record fee of €125 million. Before Wirtz's arrival, Liverpool had already spent approximately €42 million on other players, but that figure surged to an astonishing €307 million with the additions of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for €46.9 million and Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt for €95 million. The Anfield club shows no signs of slowing down.

What is Liverpool's budget for this summer?

Reports indicate that Liverpool plans to further enhance their squad with additional signings ahead of the new season. There are suggestions that Liverpool aims to secure another striker, with Newcastle's No.9 Alexander Isak being touted as a target. This ambitious acquisition could cost at least £150 million (€173 million), pushing Liverpool's summer expenditures to an eye-watering €481 million. Moreover, they may also need to acquire at least one more central defender before the Premier League season begins.

If Liverpool completes the signing of Isak and secures another central defender, they risk breaking the record for the highest amount spent by a club in a single transfer window. Currently, Liverpool ranks sixth on that list but could easily eclipse Chelsea's record spending of €464 million in the summer of 2023. The question remains: how do they plan to finance this?

Expected income from player sales this summer

Much of Liverpool’s activity in this transfer window comes from the lack of spending last season, where they actually recorded a €5 million profit. However, this alone won’t cover their ambitious moves in the coming months. To mitigate costs, several high-profile players have been earmarked for sale before the new season kicks off. In addition to the €63.3 million generated from the sales of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhín Kelleher, Nat Phillips, and Jarell Quansah, Liverpool is also set to sell star winger Luis Diaz this week.

As per information from Transfermarkt, the Colombian winger is expected to transfer to Bayern Munich for around €70 million, along with an additional €5 million in achievable add-ons. This would bring their total income from transfers in this window to at least €138.3 million, reducing their net spending for the summer (prior to any moves for Isak) to a manageable €170.4 million. Nonetheless, Diaz may not be the last player leaving the English champions in the upcoming month.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool is actively pursuing the sale of Darwin Núñez, who has reportedly attracted interest from Serie A champions Napoli. Despite his initial cost of €85 million, Liverpool expects to receive around €50 million for the striker. Another notable player potentially moving on this summer is Ibrahima Konaté. Although he plays a vital role in Slot’s plans, he is said to be rejecting contract offers, meaning he could enter the final year of his current deal if he remains this season without an extension.

Adding to this, rumors linking Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, and Stefan Bajcetic to transfers comprise a total market value of just under €150 million. Should the club sell all these players alongside Núñez and Diaz, they could achieve total income from player sales of approximately €338 million, significantly offsetting the substantial amounts spent on new signings ahead of the new season.
