Player Profile
Manchester United’s search for new talent to enhance their first team has been a challenging undertaking. Nonetheless, the club remains committed to scouting for the next stars of Old Trafford. In addition to familiar Premier League names like Bryan Mbeumo, the Red Devils are also monitoring a number of emerging talents who could add depth to the squad.
One of the most promising players in question is Eivind Helland. Reports from The Athletic indicate that Manchester United have sent scouts to observe the young Brann defender multiple times in the Norwegian top-flight, demonstrating their interest in bringing him onboard. With a market value estimated at €3.5 million, the 20-year-old is a feasible acquisition. However, persuading him to leave the club where he began his senior career may prove challenging.
When approached about the links to Manchester United, Helland responded with a level of maturity atypical for his age, largely downplaying the potential transfer. “I haven’t thought much about it [Manchester United],” he shared with Norwegian outlet VG. “That’s just how it is in football. I remain calm and feel comfortable here; my plan is to stay.” Even when directly asked if he could see himself moving to England this summer, he bluntly replied, “No, I’m going to play really well with Brann.” This raises the question: who is this young defender, and why is there so much interest from Manchester United?
Assessing Eivind Helland’s Abilities
Helland made his league debut for Brann at just 18 years old, coming on in the closing moments against Molde in July 2023. However, it wasn’t until the following season that he began to secure regular playing time, appearing 14 times for the Eliteserien team and helping them finish second in the league. This year, he has stepped into a starting role as a centre-back and has started every match so far, solidifying his place as a key player for manager Freyr Alexandersson. Additionally, Helland has represented Norway at various youth levels, making 22 appearances. But how is he perceived within Norwegian football?
“He’s a massive talent,” says Bastian Schmitz, Transfermarkt data scout for Norway, when discussing the potential Manchester United target. “Defensive players aren’t often in the spotlight, but his reputation among scouts is exceptionally high, and he is likely to be a national player soon.” Schmitz elaborated on Helland’s playing style: “He possesses an impressive physique at 6ft4, with a strong build that could see him compete physically in the Premier League. His speed and passing ability also stand out.” When asked about his versatility, Schmitz noted, “He primarily plays as a central defender but is also effective as a right-back and in defensive midfield.”
While excelling in the Norwegian league is commendable, succeeding in a top-five league like the Premier League presents a different challenge. Schmitz acknowledged Helland’s promise but pointed out that he might not be ready for immediate action at Manchester United. “Helland is still young, so determining if he’s ready for the Premier League is complex,” Schmitz remarked. “He has room for improvement, particularly in his defensive positioning, but his raw potential is undeniable, and a move to the Premier League wouldn’t surprise anyone in Norway.”
