The health and well-being of footballers are more crucial than ever as the demands of modern football take a toll on their bodies. Shortly after FIFA celebrated the success of the newly revamped Club World Cup, Fifpro, the global players' union, criticized the tournament, asserting that the federation prioritized revenue growth over players’ health in an interview with the BBC.

With the intense summer heat of North America, both finalists Paris Saint-Germain and champions Chelsea faced the challenge of completing at least seven matches during the tournament. Chelsea, in particular, participated in a total of 65 matches across five competitions. This figure does not even account for the numerous games played by elite players for their national teams throughout the season. So, which players logged the most minutes for both club and country last season? Including the Club World Cup within the framework of the complete 2024/25 season reveals some striking statistics.

Surprisingly, the player with the most minutes played in Europe’s top five leagues this season is neither from PSG nor Chelsea. Uruguayan and Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde leads all players, amassing nearly 500 more minutes than anyone else. Coming in second is Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, despite his team not participating in the Club World Cup. However, fans at Old Trafford likely expected to see their dependable No. 8 among the leading players.

A noteworthy detail is that eight out of the top ten players represent clubs that participated in this summer's Club World Cup. Real Madrid’s midfield trio of Valverde, Jude Bellingham, and Aurélien Tchouaméni, along with Kylian Mbappé, comprise four representatives from the Spanish club. They are joined by Manchester City's Tijjani Reijnders and Josko Gvardiol and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah. AC Milan's Mike Maignan finishes off the top ten, placing third.

In a testament to the depth of the new European champions, PSG only features two players in the top 20. Full-back Achraf Hakimi ranks fourth, followed by midfielder Vitinha in eighteenth. In contrast, Real Madrid boasts four players in the top 20, indicating that former manager Carlo Ancelotti may not have prioritized squad rotation or bench utilization.

Examining which players made the most appearances for their clubs and national teams last season reveals a different list. Valverde once again tops the chart with 76 appearances for club and country, yet several players who didn’t make the top 20 for minutes played join him. Paris Saint-Germain's various attacking and midfield players, such as Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doue, and Fabián Ruiz, show the depth of quality options the French club had last season. Notably, Real Madrid and Croatian legend Luka Modrić holds fifth place with 73 appearances for the season, although he didn't appear on the minutes leaderboard, suggesting he was frequently utilized as a late substitute.
