Davids partnered with American sculptor and video artist Paul Pfeiffer to create the entrance for the exhibition, crafting an incredibly immersive space that captures the essence of standing in the players’ tunnel before a crucial match. This installation features audio recorded during a Milan derby at the San Siro.

“Juan Mata reached out to me and invited me to get involved,” the 52-year-old shared. “I agreed, collaborated with Paul, and we brainstormed this concept together. His support was invaluable; he’s a highly respected artist currently showcasing his work in Chicago. Together, we envisioned this fictional tunnel.

“I spoke with several former players, and I found that everyone has a unique perspective on the experience. That’s what makes it interesting. People often ask what I hope the audience will take away, but it’s about the individual experience. You really need to engage with it, listen, and feel the atmosphere to truly understand it. Before experiencing it, it’s hard to fully grasp the impact of the tunnel on a player.

“The Milan derby boasts one of the most electric atmospheres, marked by the fierce rivalry and the palpable energy from the fans cheering.”

‘Football City, Art United’ is on display at Aviva Studios in Manchester until August 24.
