Bayern Munich suffered a double blow in the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals—not only were they knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-0 defeat, but they also lost their star playmaker Jamal Musiala to a serious injury.

The match, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, saw late goals from Désré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé seal the win for PSG. But the spotlight quickly shifted from the result to Musiala’s injury, which occurred after a challenge from PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Referee Anthony Taylor chose not to review the incident, leaving Bayern fans and staff outraged.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good,” said Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, during a halftime interview. The visible contortion of Musiala’s ankle sparked serious concern on the touchline. Max Eberl, director of sport, added: “I don’t believe Donnarumma acted intentionally, but there was a serious lack of care.”

Emotional Fallout from Musiala’s Injury

Head coach Vincent Kompany expressed his concern after the match. Known for his composed demeanor, Kompany was visibly shaken.

“It certainly looked dire. I hope it isn’t serious, but the signs aren’t encouraging. I wish him a swift recovery,” he said.
“I’m not upset about the loss—that’s football. But this injury happened to someone who truly loves the game.”

While early reports from Atlanta suggest a broken fibula, Bayern Munich has not yet confirmed the exact diagnosis.

Jamal Musiala’s Absence Complicates Bayern’s Pre-Season Plans

This injury adds to Kompany’s growing list of setbacks. Last season, key players like Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito suffered injuries that disrupted Bayern’s Champions League ambitions. Now, before the 2025/26 season even begins, they may be without Musiala for an extended period.

“I don’t like to complain,” said Kompany. “We need to stay focused and composed. But some things, like this injury, are simply out of our control.”

Bayern Eyes Transfer Market After Musiala Blow

Bayern’s attention has now turned to the transfer market. The club has already faced frustrations—missing out on Florian Wirtz, seeing Nico Williams renew with Athletic Bilbao, and Jamie Gittens opting for Chelsea. High-profile targets like Rafael Leão appear out of reach.

However, one emerging option is Nick Woltemade of VfB Stuttgart. The 23-year-old attacker had a breakout performance at the U21 European Championships, scoring five goals and providing three assists in five games. Personal terms with Bayern have reportedly been agreed, but Stuttgart is upset over the approach Bayern took.

Can Woltemade Fill the Void?

Woltemade could be a short-term solution for Bayern, offering versatility in both attacking midfield and forward positions. However, Musiala’s absence may require more than one replacement.

In addition to a central attacker, Bayern may need to secure a new left winger. The club has earned over €50 million from tournament participation, which could aid in their recruitment strategy, even if those funds aren’t immediately available.

The situation remains fluid, but Bayern’s response in the transfer market over the coming weeks could define their 2025/26 campaign.
