After Jamal Musiala injury – How will Bayern Munich react in the transfer market?

Bayern Munich’s FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal clash with Paris Saint-Germain ended in disaster. A 2-0 defeat knocked them out of the tournament—but more devastating was the loss of playmaker Jamal Musiala to a serious injury.

The match at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium saw late goals from Désré Doué (79’) and Ousmane Dembélé (90+5’) seal PSG’s victory. However, it was an incident involving Gianluigi Donnarumma, who fouled Musiala near the edge of the box, that dominated headlines. Despite the severity of the tackle, referee Anthony Taylor declined to review the challenge and immediately sent both teams to their locker rooms.

Bayern in Shock Over Musiala’s Condition

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good,” said Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund during halftime in an interview with DAZN. Musiala’s ankle appeared severely twisted upon impact, sparking anger within the Bayern camp.

“When I land on Musiala’s lower leg while sprinting and weigh 100 kg, there’s a serious risk of injury,” commented Max Eberl, Bayern’s director of sport. “I don’t think it was intentional, but it was careless.”

Head coach Vincent Kompany, typically calm in post-match conferences, couldn’t hide his frustration.

“It didn’t look good at all. I hope it’s not too serious, but the signs aren’t encouraging,” he said. “My blood is still boiling—not because of the scoreline, but because something like this happened to someone who lives for football.”

Although initial reports out of Atlanta suggest a broken fibula, the club has not yet confirmed the diagnosis.

What’s Next for Bayern Munich?

Musiala’s injury is yet another major blow for Vincent Kompany, who already had to deal with key absences last season—including Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito. Just as the 2025/26 campaign approaches, Bayern must prepare without one of their most influential players.

“We have to remain calm and objective,” said Kompany. “This is part of football, and while we can’t control everything, we have to act smartly moving forward.”

Bayern’s Transfer Strategy After Musiala’s Injury

Bayern is now expected to become more aggressive in the transfer market. They’ve struggled recently to secure key targets:

  • Florian Wirtz slipped away
  • Nico Williams renewed with Athletic Bilbao
  • Jamie Gittens chose Chelsea
  • Rafael Leão remains out of reach

One promising target is Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart. The 23-year-old attacker had a standout U21 European Championship, scoring five goals and providing three assists. Bayern is said to have reached personal terms with the German international, but negotiations with Stuttgart could be tricky due to the club’s dissatisfaction with Bayern’s behind-the-scenes approach.

Is Woltemade Enough?

While Woltemade could help ease the short-term loss of Musiala, he won’t be enough on his own. Bayern likely needs additional reinforcements, particularly a left winger and possibly another central attacking midfielder, depending on the final diagnosis of Musiala’s injury.

Despite earning over €50 million from the Club World Cup, Bayern’s ability to immediately deploy those funds remains limited. Still, the financial cushion may allow them to make decisive moves before the transfer window closes.

Bottom line: Bayern Munich faces another test of depth and strategy. With Musiala sidelined, the next few weeks could define their entire 2025/26 campaign.
