After Chelsea’s unsuccessful attempts to sign 20-year-old winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, the transfer is officially set to proceed now that the summer transfer window is open. The Premier League club had two bids rejected just before the Club World Cup for the U21 England international. Gittens traveled with Dortmund to the U.S. for the tournament, where speculation surrounding his transfer continued. Dortmund has now confirmed a deal in place with Chelsea, announcing it on Saturday.
Recent reports indicate that Dortmund had turned down a €35m offer for Gittens only days prior, with the club aiming for a fee in the region of €60m. Their resolve was further demonstrated when they rejected a second bid of €50m. Chelsea hoped this offer would be sufficient, but Dortmund raised their asking price to €65m, a figure that Chelsea has ultimately agreed to by paying around €64m. Gittens has also reached personal terms with Chelsea on a contract running until 2032.
“Negotiations with Chelsea were challenging, but we are pleased to meet our expectations and secure planning stability,” said BVB Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl in a club statement. “Jamie is an outstanding player who has brought us joy. It was his desire to advance his career at Chelsea, and we wish him all the best and great success.” Chelsea has not yet confirmed the transfer.
What to Expect from Gittens at Chelsea
So, what can Chelsea supporters anticipate from Gittens? Signed by Dortmund on a free transfer in 2020, Gittens appeared poised to become a key talent in the club’s setup. In the 2024/25 season, he showcased his potential, scoring five goals and providing four assists in just 15 league matches, earning a regular starting spot under Nuri Sahin. However, as Dortmund’s season faltered and Niko Kovac took over, Gittens found himself increasingly sidelined.
With his playing time dwindling, Dortmund became more inclined to sell the U21 international. There was a general sentiment that, despite his talent, Gittens had limitations. He is quick and effective in one-on-one situations, but his approach can be somewhat predictable. Unlike his more versatile teammate Karim Adeyemi, Gittens struggles to adapt to multiple playing positions and lacks a clinical finishing ability. Additionally, Kovac’s emphasis on defensive responsibilities from his forwards further contributed to Gittens’ reduced role.

Despite these challenges, interest in Gittens remained high, with several clubs monitoring his situation, even as Dortmund had to adjust their initial €100m valuation. Ultimately, he possesses qualities that could make him effective in the Premier League, particularly his speed, which can be a significant asset. While Dortmund isn’t desperate to sell, they will expect Chelsea to meet their demands to finalize the transfer.
