The forward featured on the left side of our main photo not only played but also scored in the inaugural 1930 World Cup, having made the journey across the Atlantic from Scotland. Born in Kilmarnock, he hailed from a family steeped in football tradition, but his father had relocated to New Jersey following his service in World War One. As the eldest son, he sought to reconnect with his family and decided to follow his father, leaving behind his job in the shipyard back home.
He obtained US citizenship just in time to participate in the first-ever tournament of its kind in Uruguay, where he netted a consolation goal during the semi-final loss to Argentina.
Following that remarkable experience, his ongoing success as a goalscorer in the United States caught the attention of numerous clubs, prompting him to announce his desire to return to Scotland.
This initiated a dramatic pursuit for his coveted signature, with United’s manager Scott Duncan going to great lengths to fend off fierce competition and secure the deal.
