It’s almost official: Juventus are poised to sign Canadian men’s national team star forward Jonathan David on a free transfer from Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille. All parties have reached an agreement, and David is set to complete his medical on Friday. He has committed to a long-term contract with the 36-time Serie A champions. With this transfer, the most valuable free agent available this summer is now off the market.

David is expected to bring a strong goal-scoring presence to Juventus. Since 2020, he has netted 109 goals and provided 30 assists in 231 appearances for Lille. He played a key role in Lille’s Ligue 1 title win in 2021, followed by a Super Cup victory in 2022. David stands as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Canadian men’s national team, having scored 36 goals in 67 matches, which places him six goals ahead of teammate Cyle Larin. He is also the second most valuable player in CanMNT history, surpassed only by Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

For Lille, this transfer poses a significant financial challenge. David, valued at €45 million, was the highest-valued player in their squad, and there were opportunities to sell him for a considerable fee in the past. However, other clubs did not meet Lille’s financial expectations. Consequently, David becomes one of the most expensive free agents to change clubs, following only Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid.

Why Juventus Acted Quickly to Sign Jonathan David

Juventus has secured a dependable goal-scorer with this free transfer. So, why did they move swiftly for David? The team urgently needs to bolster its striker position, especially given David's particular skill set. Transfermarkt Italy’s Content Manager, Aniello Luciano, noted, "The relationship with Dušan Vlahović has soured, and his performances have not met expectations. Juventus had already begun to aim for a quicker, more mobile forward to enhance their attack."

Indeed, Juventus is currently lacking in depth in their center-forward position. "Aside from Arkadiusz Milik, who has been sidelined due to injury, head coach Igor Tudor has only wingers and attacking midfielders at his disposal—these are primarily technical players with speed," Luciano explained. "That’s why David could be integral to the team’s playing style, which focuses on pressing, quick transitions, and intensity." A look at Juventus's squad confirms this: apart from the sidelined Vlahović and Milik, they only have Randal Kolo Muani under contract, whose future remains uncertain. Kolo Muani's loan was recently extended until the FIFA Club World Cup, but he is set to return to PSG on July 15.

"Whether they can retain Kolo Muani depends on PSG's financial demands," said Luciano. Regardless, Juventus plans to secure at least one more striker to partner with David. “Juventus's strategy should involve offloading Vlahović and bringing in a forward who can complement the former Lille player," Luciano added. "A dream target would be Victor Osimhen, a proven talent in Serie A. It is crucial for Juventus to avoid making additional transfer errors or exceeding financial limits, as acquiring multiple top players, along with the associated transfer fees and wages, will not be straightforward."
