Olivier Giroud is set to make a return to his home country of France. On Friday, Los Angeles FC (LAFC) and the star striker announced they have mutually agreed to part ways. Giroud’s final match with LAFC will be this Sunday against the Vancouver Whitecaps, and he has been linked to a move back to France, where Lille is keen to secure the 38-year-old forward.
“Olivier has been an outstanding professional during his tenure at LAFC,” said John Thorrington, Co-President and General Manager of LAFC, in an official club statement. “He brought a winning mentality and humility that elevated everyone around him. Olivier has served as a tremendous ambassador for our club both on and off the pitch. We are thankful for his contributions and wish him, along with his wife Jennifer and their family, all the best in this next chapter.”
Giroud joined LAFC on a free transfer from AC Milan last summer. During his time with the club, he scored five goals and provided three assists in 37 appearances. His stint in the U.S. coincided with LAFC’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, where the team exited after the group stage, with Giroud struggling to make an impact over 161 minutes play against Chelsea, Esperance, and Flamengo.
Is Giroud Returning to Lille? – An Imminent Deal
What lies ahead for Giroud? Reports from France indicate strong interest from Lille, especially as they prepare to lose Canadian striker Jonathan David to free agency and seek to strengthen their attacking options. However, signing Giroud poses a risk, as he faced significant challenges with the physical demands of MLS and may find Ligue 1 equally tough.
