After nearly two years away from professional football, Paul Pogba is set to make his return next season. His last match was with Juventus against Empoli in September 2023, following a suspension due to a failed drug test from August. Initially banned for four years in February 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced his punishment to 18 months, allowing him to train from January and fully lift the ban in March.

In November, Pogba and Juventus mutually agreed to end his contract, leaving the 32-year-old seeking a new club. While there was speculation regarding moves to the United States or Saudi Arabia, he is now expected to join Monaco. Reports from France suggest the midfielder has agreed to a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 club, although Pogba himself has been non-committal, stating, “I haven't signed anything... But there's interest. We'll see. In life, you never know.” Despite this uncertainty, Pogba appears on the verge of joining Monaco. The question remains whether he can return to his best form after such a lengthy absence.

Paul Pogba: Will His Comeback Be Successful?

It's difficult to ascertain how long it will take Pogba to regain full match fitness after a significant break. At his peak, he was among the world's top midfielders, but his returned stint at Juventus was marred by injuries prior to his ban. As illustrated in the graphic below, Pogba played only 12 matches in over a year after rejoining the club from Manchester United, missing 57 matches due to injury.

Pogba is eager to revive his career at Monaco, which recently secured a Champions League spot after finishing third last season. This will mark his first experience playing in Ligue 1 and he will join a promising group of young talents at the club. The key question is whether Pogba will have a successful return. “There's a buzz in France about Pogba signing for Monaco,” noted Joachim Durand, Ligue 1 expert at Transfermarkt. “The excitement is palpable, yet I have my reservations. At 32 and after such a lengthy absence, I wonder if he can recapture his previous form. However, his mentality shows optimism; he feels like a young player arriving at a new training ground.”

Can Paul Pogba Earn a Return to the France Squad for the World Cup?

While it may seem ambitious at this stage, Pogba has a strong motivation to reclaim his spot in the France national team ahead of next summer's World Cup. Durand is optimistic about this possibility, saying, “Regarding a return to the national team, I believe he has the tools to succeed. Didier Deschamps holds him in high regard, recognizing that players of his caliber are rare. Deschamps has shown willingness to reintegrate players, as evidenced by Kanté’s return for Euro 2024. Furthermore, Monaco's Champions League participation aligns with Deschamps's criteria, as he views it as the closest competition to the international level. If Pogba performs well, he could certainly make his way back into the squad.”
