UNITED IN SWEDEN
Our connection with Sweden dates back several decades, starting with a Fairs Cup match against Djurgarden in 1964. It wasn’t until 30 years later that we faced another Swedish club, IFK Gothenburg, during the Champions League group stage.
Jesper Blomqvist, a standout player from that Gothenburg team, joined us in 1998, becoming our first Swedish player. Since then, five more Swedes have donned the United jersey, including national team captains Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson, and Victor Lindelof.
Ibrahimovic made his debut for United in 2016 during a match against Galatasaray in Gothenburg, four years after we had faced Barcelona in the same city.
The Strawberry Arena, where we played against Galatasaray, also hosted the Europa League final in 2017, in which we triumphed over Ajax with a score of 2-0.
